About the Walk to Emmaus
The Walk to Emmaus is an interdenominational renewal movement designed to enhance the discipleship and leadership gifts of members of a local church. It takes seriously the New Testament concepts of servanthood as illustrated by the life of Christ.
The Walk to Emmaus begins with a three day retreat which covers topics of grace, discipleship, and what it means to be the church. During this time participants will have opportunity to examine their relationship to Christ and one another. The Emmaus Community is made up of those who have attended either an Emmaus or Chrysalis weekend. After the weekend participants are encouraged to meet in small groups to support, strengthen, and challenged each other as disciples of Jesus Christ.
The Walk to Emmaus is interdenominational although connected to the United Methodist Church through the Upper Room.

Sponsorship
For the sponsorship model read Luke 24:13-25. In these verses we see that Jesus joins those who are already believers. Additionally, faith is “re-explained”, grace is “re-experienced”, and individuals return to Christian community to share their experience. Emmaus is good for many but it is not for everyone.
Quality sponsorship begins with prayer because through prayer, God reveals to us, whom he wants us to sponsor. Quality sponsorship is the foundation for a healthy effective Emmaus movement. It fulfills its purpose of developing Christian leaders and renewal of the church.
Sponsorship training is held following most monthly gatherings. The Upper Room requires that all Pilgrims be sponsored by someone who has already taken their walk and has gone through sponsorship training. For further information contact the Jackson Area Emmaus Community Lay Director.
Emmaus Prayer Chain
As Christians it is our privilege to bear one another’s burdens. The Jackson Area Emmaus Community has a prayer chain to help accomplish this important task. Clicking this link will allow you to send a message directly to the prayer chain coordinator.
Gatherings
Part of the Emmaus experience is the system of monthly Gatherings. At these Gatherings, the Emmaus community gathers to have a potluck meal together followed by a devotional time with singing and the highlight of the evening, communion together.
Family members and guests of members of the community are welcome to attend as well. This is a wonderful time to get to know each other better. Following the Gathering sponsorship training is offered.
The Jackson Emmaus Gatherings are held at 5:00pm the second Saturday evening of each month except August and December when special events take place.
In lieu of the typical Gathering for August the Emmaus Community has its annual picnic at one of the local parks at noon on the second Saturday.
In December the Community gathers for caroling at 3:00pm before the normal Gathering.
